Chapter One

Conn Caspian shoved open the thick, heavy metal door of the bar and stepped inside. It might only be three o’clock in the afternoon, but as far as he was concerned, this day could take a giant hike to hell. It already had for him.

As he made his way through the empty joint, his worn cowboy boots slapped against the scarred hardwood floor, leaving puffs of dirt in his wake. Conn slid onto the ripped-up black vinyl stool, ignoring the powdery soil coming off of his jeans. Removing his formerly dark brown cowboy hat, Conn dropped it on the bar, ignoring the plumes of dust that flew in all directions.

Phil Lenew, the balding, rotund bartender and owner of Phil’s Stop, didn’t bat an eye. This wasn’t a get-showered-and-dressed-up-to-find-a-partner-to-warm-your-dick kind of place. Cowboys came in straight from work whether it was the range, barn, or whatever that had them ready to search out a much needed beer or three.

“Beer or whiskey, my friend?” Phil asked, setting a square cork coaster on the bar in front of Conn.

“Whiskey with a beer chaser then keep the beer coming,” Conn said through clenched teeth. Shit, his body hurt.

Setting the clear shot glass on the coaster, Phil tipped the whiskey bottle until the amber liquid almost reached the top of the glass. “So, what did Tay do this time? For years you had that old guy working for you, causing trouble. Now it seems like you’ve exchanged one for the other.”

Conn threw his head back and emptied the shot glass in one swallow. If Phil only knew that Tay was the old guy who, until a few months ago, had been known as Ty. When Ty had turned ninety, he “died,” coming back as a young man named Tay, who looked about twenty-one. This was common for shifters who lived long lives. Conn had reinvented himself a couple of times as his own nephew or grandson. This allowed him to continue to own and work the ranch. He liked Montana and didn’t intend to leave for another few hundred years or so.

“Stix, the old bull, needed to be put into a fresher pasture. Instead of waiting for the rest of the guys, Tay decided that he could do it by himself.” Conn emptied half the glass of beer in two gulps.

Phil whistled, and his thick gray eyebrows lifted halfway up his prominent forehead. “Tell me he at least used a four-wheeler or horse.”

A bitter bark of laughter escaped Conn. “Yeah right. The kid went in with a rope, thinking he could lead the damn thing out of there.”

“Holy shit. Is he in the hospital?” Phil asked.

“No, I managed to get him out before Stix massacred him.” Conn emptied the beer and gestured for another one.

Conn couldn’t tell Phil that he had been in the barn and heard the unmistakable moan a tiger made when he was scared or agitated. Conn had raced into the yard and saw Tay, in his tiger form, cowering in the middle of the pasture.
